Chandaria Accident and Emergency Centre

Ambulance Emergency EntranceThe 24-hour Accident and Emergency centre of the Nairobi Hospital is well staffed with certified professionals in advanced cardiac life support, advanced trauma life support and acute psychological support counseling. Compliance to the international standards of emergency/trauma life support has shaped the hospital's speedy response to trauma incidents, accidents and disasters. Being the first facility at the entrance of the hospital, it is strategically located to conveniently attend to emergency cases.

The department was established in 1986 with a per day capacity of 120-150 patients and has actively grown to the current capacity of over 260 patients a day. Equally, the medical staff has increased from 8 doctors and 20 nurses to the current 25 doctors and 44 nurses. A fully fledged pediatric unit was established four years ago and attends to over 70 patients a day.

A well laid-out disaster preparedness plan coupled with well-equipped facilities has made the centre a one stop total quality emergency centre. Its top of the range facilities include a helicopter landing, resuscitation room, X-Ray, CT scanner, laboratory, pharmacy and a fully equipped theatre to manage minor and major operations in emergency care. Our trauma handling expertise is exceptional; the whole A&E team is involved and within a few minutes of arriving at the hospital gate, the patient has been assessed and necessary care recommended.

ambulance parkingResuscitation is carried out in a well equipped area with facilities for continuous monitoring of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. A team of well trained doctors and nurses carry out intubations and respiratory support. Assistance from our 24 hour laboratory ensures availability of blood for transfusion and other laboratory tests that are required. Portable x-rays and ultrasounds are carried out within the resuscitation room if required. Emergency CT scans are also carried out within the department.

With the team of professional staff, well versed in emergency care, our patients are stabilized before transfer to the wards. Respiratory support and monitoring during transfer are available if required. Critical care does not end in the A&E, our care is provided as a continuum with partner staff in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and HDU (High Dependency Unit).

These critical care units are indeed referral centres for the whole East and Central African region. A strong team of consultant surgeons working together with the A&E staff, regular skill checks and drills ensures that the best possible care is availed to all our patients. Expert sub-specialty care is provided by our visiting consultants making the Nairobi Hospital a regional referral centre.
