The Nairobi Hospital is renown for the high quality nursing care and provision of excellent patient services in the country, regionally and globally. Professionalism is an aspect we pride ourselves in; we take great care to recruit and retain nurses of high calibre who are committed to patient care.
To achieve that quality of care, procedures, policies and standards have been put in place using internatioinal bench marks. Regular internal audits are done to ensure that the care at any time is improved.
The nursing division is the hospital's backbone in medical care giving patients a positive hospital experience and a conducive environment for quick recovery.
The division consists of:
- Operating Theatres
- Infection control
- Quality improvement nursing
- Social work
- Central Sterile Services Division.
Nursing services are headed by the Director of Nursing (Matron) who is deputized by two Assistant Matron. They are assisted in the operations of the various sections by Charge Sisters.
Janet F. K. Mathiu, KRN, KRM, SRN, BSc. - Nursing & HSM Matron/Director Nursing Services
Janet is a Kenya Registered Nurse, Kenya Registered Midwife, and Senior Registered Nurse and holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing and Health Services Management. She joined The Nairobi Hospital on 15th November 1976. She previously worked in Mater Hospital as a Midwife and is widely traveled locally and internationally.
Janet enjoys reading generally, listening to music especially classical, traveling, playing squash, swimming, salsa dancing and associating with those less and needy people through the Church.
Sr. Norah A Onyango
Sr. Onyango is a Kenyan Registered nurse, Kenya Registered midwife and she holds a higher diploma in Child Nursing from Red Cross Children Hospital and BLS from the Post-Basic Department of The Nairobi Hospital. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Open University in Cape Town, South Africa.
She has worked in both medical and surgical units and specialised in paediatrics. She formerly chaired Nursing Process Committee and Quality Steering Committee. She is a member of the Medicine and Therapeutics Committee, Tender Committee and she is a member of Paediatric Nurses Chapter and NNAK.
Sr Waruiru is a Kenya Registered Nurse and, Kenya Registered Midwife, registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya. She is also a Senior Registered Nurse, registered with Nursing Council of England and Wales.
Sr. Marren Chunga
Sr. Chunga has more than 25 years of experience in Nursing and she holds a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) from the University of Nairobi, Master of Science in Psychology from Walden University (USA). She has also studied midwifery at Pumwani Hospital and general nursing at The Nairobi Hospital. She is certified by the Nairobi Hospital in critical care nursing and has been a clinical instructor in critical care at the Intensive Care Unit.
She is a member of The National Association Nurses of Kenya, American Psychological Association, PSI CHI The International Honor Society in Psychology and has been granted Lifetime Membership. She is certified in Leadership Skills enhancement, Diplomacy, Business Protocol and Management Development. She is currently pursuing Ph. D in Psychology with specialization in Health Psychology at Walden University.
Sr. Rachel W. Njoroge - Continuous Quality Improvement
Sr. Rachael Njoroge ia a Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse. She trained at KMTC Nairobi and qualified in 1987. She holds a BScn in nursing, a Diploma in Critical Care Nursing among many other short courses e.g. Management and supervisory development skills, quality assurance course, Trainer of Trainer's course in Life Support, Lead auditors course and Mentorship. Currently she is pursuing a Master's degree in nursing at Dundee University on distant learning.
Sr. Njoroge was employed at the Nairobi Hospital ICU from October 1992 as a staff nurse, promoted to a sister level in January 1996 and to charge sister in January 2006
Sr. Sara I. Kamamo - Unit Manager, Galleria.

she was appointed Unit Manager for the new Nairobi Hospital Outpatient centre at Galleria Mall in August 2011. Previously she was in-charge of Continuous Quality Improvement department from 2007. Sara Kamamo holds a Masters Degree Nursing from University of Dundee, Scotland. She is a Registered Nurse, Midwife & Public Health Nurse. She has previously worked as a bed side nurse in the ICU & the Accident & Emergency centre and as an ICU lecturer at the Cicely McDonnell School of Nursing. As the Unit Manager, Sara provides leadership to staff and management of the patient services at the outpatient centre.
Sr. Rose Ngugi - Infection Control Nurse
Sr. Rose Ngugi qualified as a registered Nurse in 1994, She worked briefly before undertaking a midwifery course in 2000. In 2001, she was employed and posted to work in the ICU. In 2002, she did a certificate course in Critical Care Nursing and worked in ICU upto March 2003. In April 2003, she was promoted to the position of Infection Control Nurse a position she has held to date. This period as Infection Control Nurse, she trained in food safety, quality management systems and ISO system, environmental management system, health care waste management, internal management system auditor, infection control and disease surveillance and others. She has been teaching and mentoring nurses on infection control procedures and policy
Sr. Ngugi is the chairperson of Kenya Infection Control Nurses Chapter. She participated in the development of National guidelines on infection prevention and control. She participated in infection control research and publishing articles on infection prevention / control.
Sr. Benta Omonge - Charge Nurse St. Luke Ward
Sr. Benta Omonge holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, a Bachelor’s in Nursing Degree from the University of Dundee in Scotland, Kenya Registered Nurse Diploma from Cicely McDonnell School of Nursing and a Kenya Registered Midwife Diploma from The Mater Hospital, Nairobi. She has 20 years of experience in general and critical care nursing. She is certified in Basic Life Support and Advance Cardiac Life Support, Mentorship and Teaching and Assessing in clinical areas. She is a qualified lead auditor for Quality Management Systems. She is a member of National Nurses Association of Kenya.
Sr. Carolyne M. Mulanda - Charge Nurse Obstetrics
Sr. Carolyne Mulanda qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1992. She worked briefly before undertaking a Diploma in midwifery at Pumwani Maternity Hospital in 1994-1995. She holds a Diploma in Healthcare Management from Kenya institute of Management. Currently pursuing a bachelors degree in Business Administration at Kenya Methodist University.
Carolyne has 16 years of experience in general, paediatric and obstetric nursing. She was promoted to position of charge sister in 2001, a position she holds to date. She is a member of the Board of Trustees for the hospital’s provident fund.
Sr. Leah Kubai - Charge Nurse, Pioneer ward
Sister Kubai is a Kenya Registered Nurse, Kenya Registered Midwife and she is current pursuing a BSc. in Nursing from American World University. She has undertaken a Diabetic Course, Teaching & Assessing Course and HIV/AIDS counseling at The Nairobi Hospital, Palliative Care for Healthcare Professionals at The Nairobi Hospice and Management Development from Consultants for Effective Training. She has 23 years of experience in nursing and has formerly worked in Paediatrics, obstetrics and Surgical wards.
Sr. Polly Mubangi - Charge Nurse, Paediatric Ward
Sister Mubangi has been a practicing nurse for 20 years. She is a Kenya Registered Nurse, Kenya Registered Midwife and and she holds a Diploma in Counselling Psychology from Tec Institute of Technology. She has formerly worked in the HDU, Medical and Surgical wards prior to being appointed to her current capacity.
Donald Mukanda Mbakhilah - Charge Nurse, St. Georges Ward
Mr. Mbakhilah holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Baraton University. He has 11 years of experience in General Nursing. He has formerly worked with Kenyatta National Hospital, Kiambu District Hospital, Mathare Mental Hospital and Agakhan Hospital.
