The Nairobi Hospital Laboratory has consistently focused on quality as a key factor for delivering accurate, reliable, timely results. As the region’s leading provider of diagnostic testing, information and services, The Nairobi Hospital Laboratory has always felt a responsibility to lead the way by example to raise the quality of laboratory diagnostic services in the region. While the Nairobi Hospital Laboratory has been certified for ISO 9001:2008 for the past 5 years, its deep commitment to clinical excellence and quality has resulted in the Laboratory obtaining the ISO 15189: 2012 accreditation. This ensures that it meets not only the quality management’s requirements but also the technical competency requirements. Attaining the ISO 15189 accreditation provides proof to our clients that the Laboratory has been independently assessed and has demonstrated that it consistently delivers technically valid results and maintains the necessary technical expertise. Furthermore, this internationally recognized accreditation underpins the Laboratory commitment to providing diagnostic services to international standards and validates its leadership position as diagnostic service provider. Accreditation means that the results are defensible to a recognized standard that does not change when laboratory personnel or circumstances change.

A mandatory requirement for accreditation is a Quality Assurance program that includes Internal Quality control. The Laboratory has established a sound internal quality control program which ensures that accuracy and precision are maintained in the performance of laboratory analysis each day. The internal Quality control results are posted onto the ACUSERA 24/7 which is Web-based online inter-laboratory data management program. This program provides Real-time comparison of data from thousands of laboratories worldwide. The program enables the laboratory to monitor analytical performance, interpret quality control results, access peer group reports and compare results with other laboratories using the same Quality Controls material and the same method and instrument. Through this program the laboratory is able to quickly and easily identify trends, system errors and reagent issues as soon as they arise and maintain high error detection using Quality Control multi-rules.

The Nairobi hospital laboratory participates in 4 international external Quality Assurance Schemes which cover an extensive laboratory test menu the   schemes include RIQAS, UKNEQAS, HUQAS and WHO-NEQAS. Panels enrolled for include, general Chemistry, therapeutic drugs, tumor markers, HIV, viral load, blood gases, microbiology, parasitology, Hematology, histology, immunochemistry, Lipid, hormonal profiles, Specific Proteins coagulation and blood transfusion. Participation in these reputable External Quality Assurance schemes assures an independent and objective evaluation of the laboratory performance, evaluation of reproducibility of applied analytical methods on a large number of participating laboratories. Acceptable External Quality Assurance results Provides confidence to physicians, patients, and health authorities, that the laboratory results are reliable.

Test methodologies and laboratory equipment are constantly evaluated and updated to keep abreast with the latest and most efficient test procedures with faster turnaround time.
