Board

The highest management organ in the hospital is an elected Board of Directors drawn from KHA members and ex-official members who include; the CEO, the Matron, the Finance Director, the MAC Chairman and Vice Chairman. The Board has the overall responsibility of managing the hospital, implementing strategies and developing corporate governance structures. The members of the board retire on rotation and can be re-elected if eligible.

Chairman of the Board

Dr. Obura holds a Bachelor of Science from Makerere University, a B.D.S from Guys Hospital Medical and Dental Schools and University of London and LDSRCS from England. With 43 years of experience in Dentistry, he has worked with the Ministry of Health, the University of Nairobi and is currently a Dental Consultant at The Nairobi Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital.

He has chaired various bodies and associations including East African Dental Association, Kenya National Committee of United World Colleges and member of International Council, Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, Karen Country Club, the Kenya Golf Union and currently The Nairobi Hospital. Dr. Obura has also been a member of the Fellow-International Association of Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgeons and Eisenhower Citizen Ambassador Program to Soviet Union Cleft Lip and Palate.

Mr Isaac Awuondo ProfileMr Isaac Awuondo
Board Vice Chairman

Mr. Awuondo holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Nairobi and has trained in London as a Chartered Accountant. He is the current Managing Director of the Commercial Bank of Africa where he has previously served as General Manager and Executive Director. He had formerly worked with Githonga and Company and Nation Printers and Publishers Limited as group Auditor and later as the Group Financial Controller and Company Secretary.

Mr Awuondo sits on the Board of several public and private organizations, including ICDC Investment Ltd, Bata Shoes (K) Ltd, Deposit Protection Fund, and the University of Nairobi Council. Through his involvement in charitable and philanthropic activities, he is the Chairman of the Kenya Conservatoire of Music, Director of the Gatsby Kenya Charitable Trust, Trustee of the Rhino Trust and Kuona Trust (supporting local artists). He plays golf and he likes reading.

Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Mailu holds an MBChB from the University of Nairobi and MSc. Med Science from the University of Glasgow. Prior to joining the Nairobi Hospital, Dr. Mailu worked in the government where he held several positions which include Director, Health Sector Reform Programme, Director, Division of Family Health and Manager of the Kenya Expended Programme.

He also worked at Kenyatta National Hospital as Quality Assurance Manager, General Outpatient Manager, Casualty/Emergency Medicine Manager and Clinical Geneticist. Before his appointment as the Chief Executive Officer, The Nairobi Hospital, he was working with UNICEF, India Country Office. Recently, he was honoured with the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) medal by His Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya.

SR. Janet Mathiu ProfileSR. Janet Mathiu
Matron and Director of Nursing Services

Mrs. Mathiu is a Kenya Registered Nurse, Kenya Registered Midwife, and Senior Registered Nurse. She holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing and Health Services Management from Manchester university. She joined The Nairobi Hospital on 15th November 1976.

She has previously worked in Mater Hospital as a Midwife and has widely traveled locally and internationally. Janet enjoys reading generally, listening to music especially classical, traveling, playing squash, swimming, salsa dancing and assisting the needy through the Church.


Ms. Rose W. Kimotho ProfileMs. Rose W. Kimotho
Board Member

Ms. Kimotho is a graduate of the School of Journalism, University of Nairobi and she is the Managing Director and founder of Regional Reach Limited. Prior to this, she was the General Manager and member of the Board of Directors of MaCann-Erickson (K) Limited. She has formerly worked with Weekly Review, Nairobi Times and Ogilvy & Mather.

Ms. Kimotho is a past chairperson of the Marketing Society of Kenya, a council member of the National Aids Control Council, Board member of the Kenya Women Finance Trust and a trustee of Rhino Ark. She was also a member of the task force on Press Law Review.


Dr. Robin Mogere ProfileDr. Robin Mogere
Board Member

Mr. Mogere holds a M.B.Ch.B from the University of Nairobi and F.R.C.S from Guy Hospital London. He has worked at the Coast General Hospital, Taita Taveta District as a Medical Officer; he later joined Kenyatta National Hospital as a consultant Surgeon and at the same time lectured at the University of Nairobi Medical School. He has served as a Medical Advisor to the United Nations in the past and he currently runs his own clinic based at The Nairobi Hospital.


Mrs. Beatrice Karanja ProfileMrs. Beatrice Karanja
Board Member

Mrs. Karanja holds a Registered nurse Diploma from the Royal Homeopthic Hospital, London and a Mid-wife Diploma from Croydon General Hospital UK. She has worked at both Royal Homeopathic hospital and Croydon Hospital in UK before relocation to Kenya where she worked as the Director of Africa Stars Horticultural Export and Import. Currently she is the Director of Corps Estate Limited.

Mr. David W. Masika ProfileMr. David W. Masika
Board Member

Mr. Masika holds a Bachelor of Arts (Land Economics) from the University of Nairobi, he is a member of the Institute of Surveyors of Kenya, a registered and licensed valuer and a member of the Valuer Registered Board. He has worked with Tyson Habenga Limited before starting Lloyd Masika Limited in 1979.

He has held various positions which include Chairman of KPLC, Chairman, Tana and Athi Rivers Development, Chairman of the Kenya Engineering Industrial Limited among others. He was also appointed chairman of the National Bank of Kenya and chairman of the Kenya Meat Commission. Mr. Masika currently sits in the Boards of Ukamba Agricultural Institute, Cheshire Homes and is chairman of two secondary schools.

FIAOMS FCS ECA FFDRCSI M (Med) Sc

Maxillofacial Surgeon trained at the University College London Hospitals. He Is a Fellow of the International Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons (FIAOMS) and a founding Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East and Central Africa (FCS ECA) and founding Fellow of the Eastern Africa Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons.

At the Nairobi Hospital Dr. Eric Kahugu currently serve as the Chairman of Division of Surgery, Vice Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee and Chairman of Standard and Ethics Committee.  He previously was Chairman of the Education Committee in the Nairobi Hospital and has served on the Theatre users Committee. 

 Elsewhere he has served as the Head of Maxillofacial Surgery and the Chairman of Divisional Dentistry at the Kenyatta National Hospital and is  an honorary lecturer at the University of Nairobi.
